(ANSA) – RIO DE JANEIRO, 04 JAN – The Municipality of Rio de Janeiro considers it “difficult” to carry out the street carnival in the city, the tourist capital of Brazil, due to the rapid spread of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus.
“There is still no definitive decision, we have Omicron entering the city with great force, it is increasingly difficult to carry out the street carnival as in previous years, we are cautious, it is a difficult decision”, said today the municipal secretary to the Cheers, Daniel Soranz. For the moment, only the parades of professional samba schools in the Sambodromo have been confirmed, where there will be stricter controls at the entrance of the public.
Millions of people, residents and non-residents, crowd the streets of Rio every year for the carnival which, among the parades of the official samba schools and the dozens of shows offered by the so-called ‘blocos de rua’ (road blocks), arrives at last a whole month.
Due to the spread of Omicron, meanwhile, the Municipality of Salvador de Bahia has already canceled the traditional city carnival parades, reports the daily newspaper O Globo.
