Against the background of the announcement of the arrival in Almaty of the Russian IL-76 aircraft with an unknown purpose and the practically absence of comments from the Kremlin in defense of its ally Nursultan Nazarbayev, speculation arose that Moscow was preparing to take advantage of the situation to repeat the Crimean or Donbass scenario already in Kazakhstan. “In Russia, there were official statements by deputies that part of the territory of Kazakhstan was donated by the Soviet Union and that it was inhabited by Russians“, – said political scientist Igor Reyterovich on the air of the Ukraine-24 TV channel.

At the end of 2020, Russian State Duma deputies Yevgeny Fedorov and Vyacheslav Nikonov announced that the territory of modern Kazakhstan is a great gift to Russia and the Soviet Union. They demanded that the lands of Northern Kazakhstan be returned to Russia.
