Hong Kong slogans activist Edward Leung released

(ANSA) – BEIJING, 19 JAN – Hong Kong pro-democracy activist Edward Leung was released for good behavior after four years in prison, following the sentence linked to his role in the 2016 protests, known as the “fishball revolution “, recalling the popular fish balls of the city.

Leung is particularly known for finding one of the best-known slogans of the former colony’s pro-democracy protests is that they saw clashes between protesters and police over law enforcement actions against street food vendors.

The activist had been in prison since 2018, serving his six-year sentence for riot: however, even surprisingly, he benefited from a one-third reduction in his sentence for good behavior, local media reported.

Leung was one of the leaders of the Hong Kong Indigenous movement, a now dissolved ‘localist’ group, which promoted Hong Kong’s unique identity against the Chinese imprint. The activist, 30, was the first to use the slogan “Free Hong Kong! Revolution of our times”, in 2016, on the occasion of his candidacy for the Legislative Council, the Hong Kong parliamentarian, from which he was later excluded for the his past as an independentist. The slogan became popular during the pro-democracy protests of 2019, but has now been banned under the national security law imposed in the former Beijing colony in June 2020 that suppressed pro-democracy movements.
