Macron press conference without questions, reporters ‘revolt’

(ANSA) – STRASBOURG, 19 JAN – Sparks at the end of the awaited visit of French President Emmanuel Macron to the EU Parliament on the occasion of the European semester led by Paris. The debate at the Plenary that followed Macron’s speech in fact lasted much longer than expected, also thanks to the constant references to the French electoral campaign made by various MEPs, above all the exponent of the Greens Yannick Jadot and the Lepenian Jordan Bardella. Macron made two replies, both 45 minutes long, but the conference scheduled for 14:45 turned into a meager statement, sparking a ‘mini-revolt’ of the dozens of reporters present in the Daphne Caruana Galizia room.

The French president arrived in the press room about 45 minutes late, accompanied by the president of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola. Macron briefly recalled the priorities of the French presidency and both reiterated the very close collaboration that will exist in the French presidency semester between Paris and the Eurochamber but the room had already partially emptied after it was announced that, contrary to what was expected , Macron would take no more questions being late on his agenda. And when the transalpine president went to one of the exits of the EU parliament, the reporters expressed their protest directly to him. “It is not possible, like this, without questions,” said a reporter in French. “I have already answered everything in the Chamber,” Macron replied before leaving.
