(ANSA) – ROME, JANUARY 20 – During the peak of its melting process, the former largest iceberg in the world, known as the A68 and became a social media star, poured over 1.5 billion tons of water into the ocean ‘water per day, approximately 150 times the amount of water used daily by all UK citizens. The BBC reports, explaining that researchers at the University of Leeds are now trying to assess the environmental impact of the melting, using available satellite data.
Among the crucial periods of the study is the one that led to its definitive disappearance with the approach to the warmer climates of the British overseas territory of South Georgia.
When it broke away from Antarctica in 2017, the iceberg covered an area of 6,000 square meters. In 2021, its traces were lost and it is believed to have definitively dissolved.
