Elections in Barbados, clear victory for premier Mottley

(ANSA) – BRIDGETOWN, JAN 20 – The Prime Minister of Barbados, Mia Amor Mottley, obtained a landslide victory in the legislative elections held yesterday in Barbados, the Caribbean republic that has recently left the British Commonwealth, obtaining with her Labor Party (Blp ) all 30 seats in Parliament. This was reported today by The Daily News of Bridgetown.

In this way Mottley, who had called early elections 18 months before the natural end of the legislature, secured a second five-year term thanks to the success without question of his political formation.

The alliances made by the opposing Democratic Labor Party (DLP) of Verla de Peiza with other political forces, such as the Alliance for Progress of the former opposing leader, Bishop Joseph Atherley, were of no avail.

De Peiza herself immediately recognized the stinging defeat after losing the match for a seat in St. Lucy against Peter Philips.

With its 280,000 inhabitants, Barbados became the youngest republic in the world last November, completely abandoning its colonial past and renouncing to have the Queen of England as head of state. (HANDLE).
