Israel: TV, police used spyware in Netanyahu investigation

(ANSA) – TEL AVIV, 03 FEB – The Israeli political world is in turmoil after the revelations of a television network according to which the police resorted to an unspecified type of spyware to collect information (without any judicial authorization) from the mobile phone of a person involved in the investigation of Benyamin Netanyahu, who is currently on trial in Jerusalem for corruption and fraud.

Last night Netanyahu immediately re-launched on Facebook the opinion of former justice minister Yariv Levin (Likud) who compared this development to the Watergate scandal and who called for the immediate closure of the trial.

The story began two weeks ago when the Calcalist newspaper revealed that police have illegally used Israeli NSO’s controversial Pegasus spyware against private citizens. After a first denial, yesterday the police admitted that some exceptions may have occurred, now under verification. One hypothesis is that among the attached phones there may be that of an official who is about to testify at Netanyahu’s trial. On the web, his supporters are asking for light to be shed on the suspicion that the investigation into the former prime minister was also conducted with illicit methods. (HANDLE).
