“Germans” are replacing the “scoop”: how the used car market in Ukraine has changed

Experts told which brands Ukrainians are interested in and in which countries they are going to buy.

According to a study by SkupAvto analysts, at the beginning of 2023, Ukrainians search for used cars on the Internet more than 700 thousand times a month. This is 8.22% of the total demand for cars.

The start of a full-scale invasion reduced the demand for cars by half compared to previous periods. However, already in April 2022, that is, in a month, the number of requests increased rapidly to a record 1.8 million searches per month. This is probably due to the search for transport for the SRW and the Armed Forces.

Such demand was facilitated by zero customs clearance introduced from April to July. After the grace period ended, the demand for used cars gradually declined.

Which countries are looking for

More often Ukrainians are looking for used cars from the USA. But this trend is gradually subsiding. For four years, it has decreased by 52% (from an average of 90,000 to 43,000 searches per month).

Also, over four years, interest in cars from Poland decreased by 34% (from 63,000 to 41,000 requests per month). The exception was a temporary increase in demand for cars in Europe, which occurred in April 2022. Most likely, this growth was due to the fact that it is the fastest way to bring a car from Poland through proximity and a simple re-registration procedure. An even greater decline in demand among Ukrainians occurred for a car from Lithuania – over four years, the number of requests fell by 68% (from 84 thousand to 27 thousand requests per month).

What brands are looking for

VAZ cars remain the leader, Renault is in second place, Mercedes-Benz is third in popularity, followed by Toyota and Ford. Note that VAZ’s demand has decreased by 55% over 4 years (from 20,000 to 9,000). This is the biggest drop in demand in the absolute sense. But the Daewoo brand has lost the most over these 4 years: – 63% (from 4.6 thousand to 1.7 thousand requests per month). On the contrary, Volvo showed the largest growth among used car brands (+288%), moving up from 40th place in popularity to 30th.
