Mercedes-Benz has faced an adverse ruling in the EU Court of Justice dispute over its duty to compensate owners of vehicles equipped with ‘illegal’ technology that overrides anti-pollution systems to protect mechanical components at low temperatures. This was announced by Bloomberg. The story stems from a lawsuit filed by a court in Germany, where a car owner complained that the device violated the rules governing the emission of polluting gases. According to reports from Bloomberg, those who have purchased a car “fitted with this unlawful device” have the “right to compensation from the car manufacturer if this device has caused damage to that purchaser”, states the Court of Justice. The case arises after the ‘diesel scandal’ involving car manufacturers in Germany. The EU supreme court in 2020 handed down a key ruling on the matter that has had a severe impact on Volkswagen. The Mercedes stock does not seem to blame the decision and rises by 2% in Frankfurt to 70.5 euros.
