The return of taxes and customs duties on imports will automatically lead to higher prices in stores.

This was stated by financial markets analyst Ivan Uglyanitsa to UBR.ua.

According to him, this most likely will not become an indicator for the NBU to weaken the hryvnia.

The analyst believes that the National Bank will be guided by other things, and primarily focus on the dynamics of the costs of gold and foreign exchange reserves.

Uglyanitsa stressed that if purchases of imported goods fall, then the fixed dollar exchange rate will remain so.

“I think that at some point they will want to take it and see how the dynamics change, whether the costs of gold reserves are growing or not. I think if they see that purchases and costs of gold reserves have fallen, then they can keep the course even further , if there is no strong pressure,” the expert said.

If demand doesn’t fall?

If Ukrainians continue to actively buy imported goods, this will mean that the new currency restrictions of the National Bank are bypassed in this way.

In this case, the regulator will have to weaken the official hryvnia exchange rate.

“And if they see that they have raised the rate, but imports are large, because they are trying to convert them into foreign currency through imports, then I think they will raise them,” Uglyanitsa said.
