Sales up in May, but food volumes drop

(ANSA) – ROME, 11 JUL – In May, a cyclical increase in retail sales of 1.9% in value and 1.5% in volume is estimated. Sales of non-food goods (+ 2.4% in value and + 2.0% in volume) and those of food goods (respectively + 1.4% in value and + 0.6% in volume, respectively) are growing . Istat indicates it. In the March-May quarter, sales grew in value (+ 1.1%) and fell slightly in volume (-0.1%). Compared to May 2021, the value grows for all forms of sale: large-scale distribution (+ 6.2%), businesses operating on small surfaces (+ 7.3%), sales outside the shops (+5 , 3%) and online commerce (+ 15.5%).

In May 2022, on a trend basis, there was an increase for the sales of non-food goods while for foodstuffs the positive change concerns only the value; in fact, the volume is down for the fifth consecutive month (-2.8% compared to May 2021). (HANDLE).
