The world -famous Brazilian photographer and activist Sebastião Salgado died at the age of 81. “His objective has captured the soul of the world with a human, poetic and deeply transformative look,” wrote Brazilian Minister of Culture Margareth Menezes on the news platform X.

In the communication of the nature conservation organization Instituto Terra founded by Salgado, it was said: “Sebastião was more than just one of the greatest photographers of our time. Together with his partner Lélia Deluiz Wanick Salgado, he sowed hope where devastation was devastated and brought about the restoration of the environment also a deep gesture of love for humanity.”

The German film director Wim Wenders portrayed Salgado in 2014 (together with Salgado’s son Juliano Ribeiro Salgado) in the documentary “The Salt of the Earth” nominated for the Oscar, which was awarded a César as the best documentary in France.

Excellent work

Salgado received numerous awards, including the World Press Photo Award (1985), the Grand Prix National de la Photography (1994) and the Prinz-von-Asturien Prize (1998).

In 2019 he was the first photographer with the Peace Prize of German Book Trade. He worked with Unicef, Amnesty International and doctors without borders, for whose campaigns he provided pictures.

Studied economist

Salgado was born on February 8, 1944 in the small town of Aimorés in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. He studied economics in São Paulo, then fled from his homeland in front of the military dictatorship and made a doctor in Economy in Paris.

He initially worked at the international coffee organization in London before his life took a turn in 1973. On a business trip in Africa, he took his first recordings with his wife’s Leica and caught fire. He quit, moved back to Paris and started working as a photographer, including for the renowned agencies Sygma, Gamma and Magnum.

He lived with his wife, an architect, mainly in Paris. The couple had been married since 1967 and has two adult sons. (dpa)
