young people particularly affected by “long Covid”

France is back above the bar of 2,500 contaminations per day. In this context, the question of vaccination becomes all the more central, in particular to avoid serious forms and hospitalizations. And for the youngest, protecting themselves against the coronavirus is also the best way to avoid the risks of a long Covid. Because a recent study showed that half of 16-30 year olds still show symptoms six months after being infected.

Norwegian researchers have indeed followed more than 300 young patients, infected with Covid-19 in the spring of 2020. Most had been placed simply in isolation, and only a minority, namely one in five, had been hospitalized. But six months later, half still show symptoms of the disease: mainly a loss of taste and smell, fatigue, but also in one in six cases difficulty in breathing or concentrating.

“Rehabilitation as soon as possible”

For the infectious disease specialist Olivier Robineau, who takes care of this patient profile at the Tourcoing University Hospital, several causes could explain these long cases, in particular inflammation or breathing problems. “There is probably part of the ventilation abnormality that may explain the fatigue in part. People who are taken care of early get better quickly, so the important message for patients and doctors is that as soon as you start have more than one month of symptoms, it is very important to start rehabilitation as soon as possible “, he explains.

To avoid these long Covid, vaccination also has an individual benefit, including in the youngest. However, 18-40 year olds are only 45% vaccinated today.
