One non-fungible token (NFT) rare from the CryptoPunks collection sold for 8,000 ETH ($23 million) last week, making it the most expensive item in the collection to date.

The NFT that set the record was CryptoPunk #5822. The token is one of nine aliens in the collection of 10,000 NFTs and also one of 333 wearing a bandana.

The CEO of blockchain technology startup Chain, Deepal Thapliyal, is the current owner of CryptoPunk. Thapliyal has other NFTs, and even bought a rare serum from the Mutant Ape Yacht Club collection for $5.8 million last month.

Prior to the current record, the most expensive CryptoPunk sold was another alien, which received $11.8 million at Sotheby’s auction in June 2021. This NFT was originally sold in dollars, not in ether (ETH).

The creators of CryptoPunks also noted on their platform that the second most expensive NFT in the collection, sold in dollars, is #4156, which fetched 2,500 ETH ($10.2 million) in December 2021.
