After six months of selection, the Sebrae and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) chose the 12 countiesof the five Brazilian regions, which will be part of the Future Brazil Tourism Programwhich will apply the Smart Tourist Destinations (DTI) strategy, which aims to strengthen business in the tourism area in these cities.

In the Midwest, the chosen cities were Pirenópolis (GO) and Bonito (MS). In the Northeast, Penedo (AL) and the capitals São Luís and Recife.

In the North region, the capital Belém and the city of Novo Airão (AM) were selected. In the south of the country, the capital Curitiba and Bombinhas (SC) were chosen.

In the Southeast, Belo Horizonte, Ilhabela (SP) and Paraty (RJ) will receive the methodology. The first meeting with the selected group will take place in São Paulo on April 4th, during the WTM.

The news was celebrated by representatives of the selected municipalities. “Small towns have many challenges.

Your support is immeasurable. I dreamed of this moment. Let’s make the most of it”, cheered the Secretary of Tourism and Environment of Novo Airão, Suzianne Fonseca de Oliveira. “This is an innovative project with important destinations. We are very proud and we are going to do well”, pledged Luiz Patrício de Bombinhas.

One of the highlights of the announcement was the inclusion of criteria that allowed the participation of small municipalities, as can be seen in the results of the selected destinations. “A smart tourist destination, conceptually, is the place that manages data to know the profile of the tourist who visits it, is committed to sustainability and generates positive experiences for both visitors and residents of the region”, emphasizes the coordinator of Tourism of the Sebrae, Ana Clévia Guerreiro.

Among the main initiatives that destinations can apply are the implementation of accessibility, internet access at strategic points, facilitating access to tourist information, creation of support applications for visitors, among others.

“The process of Smart Tourist Destinations is inclusive. It is being done in an integrated way with the partners, respecting the extensive geographic region of our country and its diversity. We will unite the available strategies, contribute to the competitiveness of tourist destinations, improve the stay of visitors, generate jobs, income and new products for those who live on the tourism. It is a proposal totally centered on sustainability and respect for good management practices”, says Ana Clévia.

For Juliana Bettini, tourism specialist at the IDB, the initiative stands out for offering technical and specialized support for the economic chain of tourism businesses. “The concept of smart tourist destinations brings an innovative look at the competitiveness of these territories, essential for them to overcome the negative effects of the pandemic in a sustainable way.

The partnership between IDB and Sebrae was born precisely from the need to support this sustainable and resilient recovery of Brazilian destinations, but incorporating innovation into it”, he points out.

The selection

The public notice for the “Programa Turismo Futuro Brasil” was launched in September 2022 with the objective of initially selecting 10 tourist destinations in the Brazil that would be supported with the elaboration and/or implementation of their Smart Tourist Destination strategies.

The large number of applications received and the quality of the projects led to the selection of two more municipalities.

Three fundamental assumptions guided the announcement: to provide opportunities for the participation of any municipalities, as long as they were on the 2022 Brazilian Tourism Map of the Ministry of Tourism (MTur), to provide representation of the five Brazilian regions among the destinations selected for support, and to select destinations with profiles different sizes, small, medium and large.
