Not even the star-studded cast formed by Jessica Chastain, Penelope Cruz and Lupita Nyong’o in the spy adventure movie “Agents 355” was a match for “Spider-Man: No Homecoming”, which dominated the box office of the USA e Canada for the fourth straight weekend.
The latest Spider-Man movie, starring Tom Holland in the lead role, took in $33 million from 4,108 theaters between Friday and Sunday, raising the total domestic theaters to $668 million.
After this weekend, “Spider-Man: No Return Home” appears as the sixth highest-grossing North American film in history, surpassing “Titanic” ($659 million) and “Jurassic World: Dinosaur World.” (652 million dollars). At this rate, he will soon take the fifth spot, which belongs to “Avengers: Infinity War” ($678 million).
It’s no small thing that “Spider-Man: No Homecoming” has amassed $30 million in a single weekend so far from its opening day.
In times of a pandemic, most movies would be lucky to sell so many tickets on their opening weekend, but they wouldn’t survive almost a month in theaters – while a highly contagious variant of Covid-19 continues to spread rapidly.
But, as this weekend showed, the public is not willing to leave the house and visit the local cinema to see any movie.
Universal’s star-studded spy movie “The 355” had to learn this the hard way. The film managed to fall short of already low expectations, generating a dismal $4.8 million from 3,145 North American locations over the weekend.
