Bulldozers on the glacier for the Ski World Cup slope, social storm

The work in progress to create the Zermatt / Cervinia slope, destined to host two races of the Alpine Skiing World Cup next season, has triggered a social storm. In a post on Facebook published the day after the Marmolada tragedy, Fisi shows mechanical vehicles at high altitudes and announces that the delegates of the International Federation “as usual” have inspected the area.

“On the famous glacier – we read – on the border of Italy and Switzerland, work continues in view of the double, historic appointment scheduled with the men’s descents on Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 October and the women’s descents on Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 November”. In particular, according to Fisi on its website, “hundreds of cubic meters of earth have been moved to cope with a better distribution of the area reserved for the finish line”.

Modifications, carried out according to FIS indications, shown by the organizing committee. The comments range from the lack of “respect for the mountains”, to the denunciation of “bulldozers that gut the glaciers”, to the request of what actions are “in place to tackle the climate crisis”. Criticism escalated after a video appeared on Instagram, dated June 2022, in which an excavator removes material from a glacier. The place seems to be the Hump of Rollin, above Zermatt, where the two World Cup ski races will start. “It makes me shiver”, is a comment, “also in light of what is happening these days (Marmolada)”.
