“For what?!” – Putin does not understand what is happening with Medvedchuk

Russian President Vladimir Putin pretends not to understand why in Ukraine his godfather, the head of the political council of the Opposition Platform – For Life party, Viktor Medvedchuk, is accused of treason.

Vladimir Vladimirovich said this during a meeting of the Valdai Discussion Club, which is now taking place in Moscow.

I did not pass on secrets

“They are trying to prosecute him for high treason. For what? Did he steal some secrets, secretly pass them on? No. For what? They are trying to jail him – for his open political position aimed at building relations with neighbors. These people are not allowed to raise their heads, someone is simply killed right on the street, and someone is isolated“, – said the President of Russia.

The Kremlin’s position

The Kremlin is dissatisfied with the decision of the Ukrainian court on the recent extension of the house arrest of People’s Deputy Viktor Medvedchuk, suspected of treason, until winter, but they cannot help him either.

“At first we said that everything that is happening to Medvedchuk is a political settling of scores by a competitor who, until recently, very rapidly strengthened his political positions in Ukraine. Of course, we strongly condemn this practice. ) help, he is a citizen of Ukraine, of his country. But we cannot approve of this “– said the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov, according to Russian media.

The Medvedchuk case

Viktor Medvedchuk is suspected of high treason and violation of the laws and customs of war. He “shines” from 12 years in prison to life. Among the charges brought against him:

• attempted plundering of natural resources (according to the investigation, in 2015 the defendants in the case entered into an agreement with an official of the Russian government to extract minerals on the Black Sea shelf);
• the transfer of information containing state secrets to the Russian special services (in 2020, Medvedchuk allegedly transferred information about a secret unit of the Ukrainian army to Kozak, who was at that time in Russia);
• anti-Ukrainian activity (Medvedchuk is suspected of intending to create an “infrastructure of influence” through the Ukrainians working in the Russian Federation).

On October 20, another investigation was launched against Viktor Medvedchuk, who is now under house arrest awaiting trial for high treason. It is being conducted within the framework of criminal proceedings under Part 2 of Art. 364 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (abuse of power or official position).
