Strawberries do not tolerate cold well. Often, gardeners plant it on the beds too early, and the plant simply freezes.
To get a generous and tasty harvest, strawberry bushes are recommended to be fed. You can use mineral fertilizers, because plants need nitrogen after winter. Manure, manure and other organic fertilizers also nourish the soil well. GLOBAL HAPPENINGS has selected the best tips to help you plant strawberries in the spring and grow large and sweet berries.
What should be the temperature
Gardeners say that most often planting strawberries begins in mid-April. The thing is, it all depends on the weather. Strawberries do not tolerate cold, so you should wait for a stable positive temperature and the absence of frost.
The air temperature should be set at +10º+15ºС, and the soil temperature in the upper layer – +8º + 9ºС.
Soil acidity
The following soil types are ideal for strawberries:
- black soil
- sandy loam
- loams.
The main thing is that the soil has a neutral acidity. It is better not to plant strawberries in the valley – this will cause rainwater to stagnate. Hills should not be chosen either – the water will drain quickly and the bushes will dry out.
Rules for planting strawberries
1. Dig up the ground.
2. Add compost or ash to the soil in the proportion of 200 g per 1 sq.m.
3. So that the plant does not get sick and does not suffer from pests, soak the roots in an antiparasitic solution.
4. Shorten the roots of strawberries to 20-25 cm. Usually bushes are planted in a single row pattern. The distance between rows should be no more than 1 m, and between the bushes – 20-30 cm.
But you can also choose the “carpet” method – the distance between the bushes will be 25-35 cm. 1 tablespoon of ash is poured into each hole and the root of the plant is placed. The soil should then be carefully compacted so that there are no air pockets.
5. Having planted strawberries, you need to water them. Under each bush should be poured 2-3 liters of water.
6. As a prophylaxis against weeds and waterlogging, you can use straw, needles or small bark, pouring them under the bushes.
7. Experts advise trimming the tendrils during growth so that the seedlings take root well.
