In the church calendar there are permanent and transitional holidays. The date of the latter changes annually depending on certain conditions. This can be, for example, a lunar calendar or a reference to another holiday (most often Christmas or Easter).
Trinity, one of the main Christian holidays, is a transitional one. When they celebrate the Trinity, read the material GLOBAL HAPPENINGS.
When is Trinity celebrated?
Orthodox believers celebrate the Trinity on the 50th day after the resurrection of Jesus Christ, Catholics – on the 57th day.
In 2023, the Orthodox will celebrate the Trinity on Sunday, June 4th.
The meaning of the Trinity
According to the events described in the Gospel, it was on the 50th day after the resurrection of Christ that the Holy Spirit descended on his disciples, the apostles, after which the latter acquired miraculous abilities.
Trinity is a day of honoring the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The holiday is also called Pentecost.
For the first time, they began to officially celebrate the Trinity in 381, after approval at the Ecumenical Council of Constantinople.
In Kievan Rus (as, in fact, throughout the world), the traditions of Christianity were closely intertwined with pagan ones. Around this period, the pagans performed rites according to the cult of nature – from there the tradition of decorating houses with greenery began.
Popular prejudice
On Trinity, as on any other great church holiday, they were not advised to engage in hard physical labor so as not to bring trouble.
Our ancestors noticed that on this day our ancestors noticed if there was no weather on that day.
In churches, it is customary to bless greenery and light candles. The corresponding liturgy is also celebrated.
In pre-Christian times, the ancient Slavs celebrated “mermaids” during this period, so the belief about the ban on swimming in open water on the Trinity “migrated” from ancient beliefs to our days.
Previously, GLOBAL HAPPENINGS published a church calendar for June.
