How to grow dill and parsley on a windowsill: simple tips

Fresh greens are not only tasty and aromatic plants, but also sources of vitamins and microelements. That is why they are an integral part of many Ukrainian dishes.

Dill and parsley are one of the easiest crops to care for, ideal for growing at home. They do not need a lot of space and do not require complex care. So without any extra effort, anyone can always have fresh herbs on hand.

When to sow greens

In fact, you can plant greens on the windowsill at any time. However, if you sow seeds during a cold and cloudy season, the plant will need additional lighting. Fluorescent lamps are ideal for this, so it doesn’t hurt to purchase them in order to never get a bountiful harvest.

Dill

The first step to a successful harvest is quality seeds. Therefore, you should buy it only from trusted manufacturers with a good reputation, because a good plant will not grow from bad seed material.

Before sowing dill seeds you need soak in water for 24-48 hours. In this case, the water should be changed every 12 hours. After this, the sunken seeds are washed and dried, and those remaining on the surface of the water are thrown away.


Then take a pot with drainage holes, 15-20 cm deep. Place a layer of expanded clay on the bottom and pour soil mixture for indoor plants on top.

Seeds should be planted in holes no deeper than 1.5 cm. After planting, water the soil generously, cover the pot with film and place it in a dark place for a week at a temperature of 18-20°C.

After the staircase has appeared, the plants should be planted at a distance 3 cm from each other. If you grow dill from October to March, place a fluorescent lamp at a distance of 50 cm above the plants and illuminate them for 6 hours a day.

The harvest can be harvested in 30-40 days.

Parsley

To begin, wrap the parsley seeds in damp gauze and leave them in a dark place on 2-3 daysfor it to germinate.

Plant parsley in the same way as dill. In a pot 15-20 cm deep with drainage holes, using expanded clay and potting soil.

After planting, place the pot of parsley where the temperature fluctuates. from 18°C ​​to 20°C and leave it there on 14-20 days. It is not necessary to cover the plants with film; they should be watered with boiled or settled water every other day.

After the first sprouts appear, you need to get rid of excess shoots and store the parsley at a temperature of 15°C to 28°C during the day. At night the permissible temperature will be 10-12°C.

The first harvest can be harvested in 2 months after emergence, when the plant grows to 10-15 cm in height.
