Don’t stop Believing. This is the name of the motto that VfL Bochum had chosen for the end of the season in the Bundesliga. However, the weakness of the weak in the past few weeks rose such hope. The Bochumers are stuck as a relegation – and have deserved it.
The final sprint had started furiously: At the beginning of March, VfL thought at least in relegation after the sensational away win at FC Bayern, and even 15th place was suddenly a further win. In the coming weeks, however, there should be no victory.
Trainer Hecking looked like the savior for a long time
Instead, defeat lined up, the performances were sometimes disastrous – including the 1: 4 against FSV Mainz 05 on Saturday. Even the point gains against Union Berlin and the direct competitors from Heidenheim recently felt like defeats. And so it came as it had to come: The home game against Mainz at the weekend will be the last Bundesliga home game for more than a year.
For a long time it looked as if coach Dieter Hecking could actually become a savior. He took over the Bochumer in a seemingly hopeless situation last November. Until then, VfL had not won a single game, only the home win against Heidenheim in December was to be the first success.

Hecking breathed life back in the Ruhrpott Club. But he was ultimately powerless due to the contaminated sites that he was not responsible. The squad, which has just been enough on paper on the Bundesliga claims, was too unbalanced, but has several blatant imbalance. The worst goal difference of all Bundesliga teams speaks volumes.
So VfL Bochum is facing a change – again. Trainer Hecking will stay and the Bochumer should lead directly back to the Bundesliga. Will he be good after the deserved descent as a hope of hope? Questionable. However, his advance of trust has not yet been used up. And as you say so beautifully: hope dies last.
