The twisted sheets and the rubble on the ground. The cordonian area and the acrid smell that stagnates on the umpteenth sultry day of the warm Roman summer. At Prenestino it is the day of reflections and hypotheses on what happened on Friday when a distributor jumped in the air by touching a massacre in the heart of the eternal city.
Investigators are also being examined by the human error during the transford of the LPG from the cisterns to the system tanks. Police, Carabinieri, Local Police and Fire Brigade are working on this, waiting to draw up an information for the magistrates of the Rome Prosecutor’s Office investigating for injuries and culpable disaster. The reclamation will also go on in the next few days, in order to acquire the greatest number of data to be provided to the prosecutors.
In the meantime, the analyzes arranged by the ARPA have identified a presence of dioxin in the air, reduced thanks to the timely intervention of the firefighters who managed to tame the flames in a short time avoiding the worst. Finally, the conditions of the two serious injuries are stable, both hospitalized at the Sant’Eugenio for the burns reported by the explosion.
More than 24 hours after the accident, in via dei Gordiani, between Prenestina and Casilina, the residents continue to ask and ask questions, still incredulous of what happened to the petrol and gas distributor that stood a few steps from the summer center from where – for pure miracle – the managers had evacuated all the children. The area has been made safe, while investigators continue the remediation work, also installing the environmental detectors who – day after day – will verify the healthiness of the air. The Civil Protection, in fact, invited all the residents and people who live within three kilometers from the place of the explosion, to keep the windows closed with the air conditioners off and avoid moving with cars and scooters. The first data record a presence of dioxin, which fortunately was reduced by the intervention of the firefighters. “Given that the health assessments are up to the ASL – explains the Civil Protection of the city – at the moment we can say that we have averted the worst, since the first day of monitoring is the most at risk from the point of view of air toxicity”.
While the investigation therefore proceeds, the regret of the continuous protests of the committees also emerges in the neighborhood for the proximity of risk systems to schools or polysportants. “What happened was not a misfortune or a fatality”, denounces the parents’ committee of the Simonetta Salacone Comprehensive Institute, damaged by the explosion. “For years, more than a decade – the parents explain – that we protest for the unlivable conditions of the area”. Meanwhile, on Monday, a first estimate of the damage to the Villa De Sanctis sports center, which feared the worst for the children of the summer center, will proceed. “It is still a blow to the heart – says the president of Polisportiva, Fabio Balzani – looks like a war scenario”. The solidarity match also started to help the structure, which insists on the district park of the same name.
And on Friday the Cepib also activated a free psychological listening center for the development of what is still a trauma not only for the neighborhood but for the whole city.
