Sweden dupies Germany: This defense is not ready for the KO-phase

Carlotta Wamser boxed several times in the lawn. The German international was immediately clear that she had made a big mistake. Due to her deliberate handball on the line, after half an hour she delayed the 1: 3 deficit of the DFB team for three minutes, but saw the red card and was neglected for Sweden. This finally led to the third goal.

The 21-year-old Wamser, who had become a regular player on the right defense after the violation of Giulia Gwinn, certainly does not affect the 1: 4 (1: 3) defeat in the third group game of the EM. With her campaign, however, she initiated an evening that the German footballers would like to forget as soon as possible.

This Saturday evening in Zurich revealed what was already indicated in the latest games: The team of national coach Christian Wück is unable to keep up with this defense. Sweden was the first real indicator and had really challenged the German footballers on the defensive for a long time. Germany did not stand up to this challenge.

At first, Wück’s match plan did not work to position his full -back Sarai Linder and Wamser very high. The latter presented Jule Brand’s lead goal, but later lacked the Swedish women several times.

This also applies to the emergence of the equalization pitch by Stina Blackstenius, which also benefited from a technical error by captain Janina Minge and a poor positional game by Rebecca Knaak. The other goals in turn initiated speed deficits from Linder and Knaak – a well -known problem.

Even in the run -up to the European Championship, the defense of the German footballers had been identified as a weak point, especially after the failure of the regular captain Gwinn. This also opened the risky squad planning of national coach Wück.

The 52-year-old had only nominated a trained right-back with Gwinn. The inexperienced Wamser had already been an emergency solution and is now at least in the quarter -finals.

Because for that, Germany is qualified despite the defeat. However, the DFB team should hardly encourage the performance against Sweden. After all, it is likely to be against one of the absolute top nations France or England.
