The fifth president of Ukraine and leader of the European Solidarity party, Petro Poroshenko, could head the Trilateral Contact Group. On February 3, the head of the VO “Svoboda” Oleg Tyagnibok said this live on the talk show “Right to Vladu”.

“I would advise President Zelensky today, you know what? There is a war, a confrontation – Zelensky and Poroshenko, like Nanai boys, are fighting and they can’t find a winner. I would advise Poroshenko to appoint the head of the Trilateral Contact Group, because he has good acquaintances, opportunities as a diplomatbut to communicate and talk with Western partners,” he said.

Tyagnibok noted that, most likely, only Poroshenko knows how to “move out” from the Minsk agreements.

Recall that now the head of the Ukrainian delegation to the TCG is the first president of Ukraine, Leonid Kravchuk.

Negotiations on Donbass

On January 12, French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said that after a long downtime, the Normandy format was working again, and it is possible to agree on important issues regarding Donbass.

On January 11, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky announced his readiness for a new Normandy Four summit and welcomed the efforts of Germany and France to practically implement the agreements reached by the leaders during the Paris summit in December 2019.

On January 7, French President Emmanuel Macron announced a meeting of the Normandy Four. The Quartet leaders last met in December 2019.

On December 15, Zelensky said in Brussels during a briefing following the results of the first day of negotiations on the sidelines of the Eastern Partnership summit that Washington should be given one of the main roles in the negotiations on Donbass.

TKH will be moved to Turkey

  • Talk about Istanbul as a platform for TCG talks on Donbass instead of Minsk is not unfounded. On January 26, the Turkish authorities offered a meeting place on their territory. The news has already been officially announced in the OSCE. In this connection, Istanbul can indeed become a new place for TCG meetings, provided that all parties agree.
  • For the first time, the Ukrainian side proposed to abandon Minsk in the spring of 2021. As explained in the Office of the President of Ukraine, the reason was the hostile rhetoric of Alexander Lukashenko and the influence of the Russian authorities on the official Minsk.
  • At the same time, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, at the end of last year, offered to become a mediator in resolving the conflict between Ukraine and Russia. However, the matter did not progress further than statements.
