Prime Minister of Rhineland-Palatinate: Schweitzer does not want to become SPD boss

The Rhineland-Palatinate Prime Minister Alexander Schweitzer recommends the SPD changes to the party leadership. The SPD politician told the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung” (Friday edition) with a view to the election party conference in June: He hoped that there would be “some new identification figures”.

“In addition to the program work, we always have to take into account that people choose people,” emphasized the head of government. “If you change, the same people are still there, it’s difficult to convey.”

Concentrate completely on the 2026 state election

“I don’t want to be a SPD chairman,” said the Prime Minister. “I don’t just want to rule in this legislative period, I would like to win the state election in March next year with the SPD,” emphasized Schweitzer, who had taken over the office of Rhineland-Palatinate head of government from the long-standing Prime Minister Malu Dreyer in mid-2024. “I concentrate completely on that.”

Schweitzer had previously spoken out in the “Politico Playbook Podcast” of the Politico news magazine for the whereabouts of Lars Klingbeil on the SPD tip. Klingbeil has been co-party leader alongside Saskia Esken, who has been the co-chair since 2019. (dpa)
