The pre-conclave comes alive, the congregations decisive

What is preparing to elect Francesco’s successor “will not be a long conclave”. To say it is an authoritative voice like that of Cardinal Reinhard Marx, Archbishop of Monaco and Frisinga – the diocese that was by Joseph Ratzinger -, representative of a crucial episcopate and at the same time ‘advanced’ like the German one, of which he was also president.

The conclave “will last a few days”, Marx assures a meeting with the press in Rome, shortly after the funeral and burial of Pope Bergoglio. For Marx, one of the three German cardinals who will vote in Sistine, and already a close collaborator of Francesco as a member of the ‘College of Cardinals’ and coordinator of the Council for the Economy, the future pope must be communicative and must “put the credibility of the Gospel at the center”. In other words, a sort of ‘continuator’ of the disappeared pontiff.

“In these days the feeling of the people of God has been seen – he adds -. Cardinals cannot ignore this feeling”. And when asked if an Italian Pope can be expected, Cardinal Marx replies: “Everything is open. It is not a matter of language, country or culture. The person has to do with it. It is not even a question that is conservative or progressive. It is a question of credibility and dialogue”. “The new pope – concludes the German purple – must have clear the importance of the Gospel all over the world. It must have a universal vision”.

Words that can find sharing in the large bands of the 135 ‘voters’ (or rather 134 for the toilet of the cardinal of Valencia Antonio Canizare Llovenra for health reasons) that are conflicting in Rome from all over the world.

Now the mourning and concomitance of Sundays impose a pause, which can be defined as prayer and reflection, with respect to the resumption of the general congregations with which this pre-conclusion will come to the heart on Monday morning at 9.00. So far four have been held, with a maximum, yesterday in the fourth, of 149 participating cardinals (on the total of 252 between voters and over the top, all invited).

From Monday all the issues concerning both the life of the Church in the world and the procedural and actual preparation aspects of the Conclave will have to be addressed in a stringent way.

Among the knots to be dissolved, and quickly, the one concerning Cardinal Angelo Becciu, who claims to be admitted to the conclave despite the Pope in September 2020 he had deprived him of “rights connected to the cardinal”. To resolve the question, which risks seriously influencing the election of the next Pope, it was proposed in the Congregation to establish an appropriate commission, made up of five corners including Becciu himself. It is therefore to be seen whether it will go on and if you can find a decisive agreement.

But the congregations are also and above all the decisive location for greater knowledge among the cardinals, many of which are unknown to most and coming from remote locations, to identify common lines and figures capable of catalyzing consents, possibly tightening alliances that can have a weight during the voting, immediately after the “extra omnes” which declares the beginning of the conclave.

The congregations will therefore continue from Monday every morning, while in the afternoon in the Vatican Basilica the masses of the “novediali” will be celebrated, that is, the nine days of mourning started today with the funeral mass of the Cardinal Decano Giovanni Battista Re and who will continue on Sunday with the other chaired by Cardinal Pietro Parolin. The masses of the “novediali” will be exhausted on Sunday 4 May.

After that, from Monday 5, perhaps more likely from Tuesday 6 if the preparations are concluded, you can enter Sistine and proceed to the votes. The wait is already at the stars, and it will be understood then if, as card. Marx, to have the new Pope, will be enough “a few days”.
