In the SPD, criticism of the US air attacks against Iranian nuclear facilities is loud. “The attempt to strengthen international order through cooperation, control and contracts is being thrown back for decades,” said SPD foreign politician Rolf Mützenich to the Tagesspiegel: “The world that has entered the Ukraine in a new phase of the war wars becomes even more insecure and the action is more unpredictable.”
It is not excluded “that the regime in Iran will not survive the next few days,” said Mützenich. “But it is also likely that the region will enter into a phase of further wars and destabilization with the associated consequences for people and the natural livelihoods.”
In this context, the former SPD parliamentary group leader criticized the United States and Iran. He accused “of those responsible in Iran” that they “wanted to create facts in order to make their way to an atomic bomb irreversible: But President Trump also has the short phase of the contractual limitation of the conflict with the unilateral termination of the nuclear agreement.”
With a view to the US attacks on the Iranian nuclear facilities on Sunday, Mütich said that “the approach of European foreign policy failed, which the federal government has recently tried again with European partners. Obviously, the US government and the government in Tehran no longer wanted to give this a chance.”
Former FDP general secretary Bijan Djir-Sarai told the Tagesspiegel: “The pressure on the Mullah regime will take enormous in the next few hours. The weaker the regime, the more secure the region will be.” The United States and Israel would insist that “the Islamic Republic loses its nuclear skills and will no longer be able to finance terrorist networks,” he said. Djir-Sarai was born in Tehran and fled to Germany in 1987.
After the air raids on the nuclear layers in Iran, US President Donald Trump warned the leadership in Tehran with a drastic threat of not making retribution strokes against US goals. In capital letters, he wrote on his Truth Social platform: “Any retaliation of Iran against the United States will be answered with a much larger force than it could be observed tonight.”
Iran could also attack US goals after the attacks on the Iranian nuclear facilities – for example, bases of the armed forces. The US military has stationed around 40,000 soldiers in the Middle East. The bases in Bahrain and Qatar on the Persian Golf, for example, are not far from Iran. In addition, Iran could also have US goals attacked by allied Shiite militias in the neighboring country.
