“These conditions of detention do not work”: Göring-Eckardt visits Maja T. in prison in Hungary

Around a year ago, the German non-born person Maja T. was delivered to Hungary and imprisoned there. Now the Green politician Katrin Göring-Eckardt Maja T. (24) has visited in prison. Göring-Eckardt expressed dismay after the meeting and called for a rule of law.

The person Maja T., which belongs to the left -wing scene, will be accused of being involved in violence against actual or presumed right -wing extremists in February 2023 and was responsible for serious physical injuries. Since February 2025, Maja T. has to answer to the Budapest city court. Maja T. has not yet commented on the acts. At the beginning of June, T. stepped into a hunger strike because of the detention conditions.

Court in Hungary refuses to apply for house arrest

“We want it to get a procedure that is flawless. We want it to be transferred to Germany,” said Göring-Eckardt in a video posted on the platform X. The “Spiegel” had previously reported on the trip of the Greens politician.

Göring-Eckardt also emphasized on X: “And yes, of course, it is the case that we want to proceed and then be determined-by the way-with the presumption of innocence-what is necessary. But these conditions of detention do not work.” That is a disaster for a person like Maja T. “It is a disaster in the middle of Europe. It is a disaster that happens here in Hungary,” said Göring-Eckardt.

Göring-Eckardt told the “Spiegel” with a view to the condition of Maja T.: “Maja is very clear and knows exactly what she is doing.” At the same time, Maja T. makes a “weak” impression.

In December 2023, Maja T. was arrested in Berlin and was delivered to Hungary in June 2024 – although the Federal Constitutional Court prohibited this. But the decision from Karlsruhe came a few minutes late.

Most recently, a court in Hungary had rejected an application for a transfer to the house arrest and justified this with an increased risk of escape in view of a possible sentence of up to 24 years in prison. After the verdict, T. said that there was “no objective reason” for further detention, the conditions of which are “inhuman”. The hunger strike will continue to protest against the isolation.

The father Wolfram Jarosch now said the ARD online that “ten kilos” has already lost weight. “This is not about justice or decent accommodation, but about a political example,” said Jarosch. It is particularly disturbing that Maja’s state of health is assessed by doctors who do not speak German and hardly any English, he adds.

Zaid A. from Nuremberg could also threaten delivery

Maja’s state is still stable, but it fears an aggravation at any time. Therefore, Jarosch demanded that the Foreign Ministry must now act urgently and to get his child back.

Despite the criticism of the delivery of Maja T. by the Federal Constitutional Court, according to the ARD report, it can now be that Germany is still delivering an accused from the so-called Budapest complex to Hungary. Syrian citizen Zaid A. from Nuremberg is said to have been involved in the attacks in Budapest.

After he had initially been submerged, he therefore faced the investigative authorities in Cologne at the beginning of the year and then was detained. According to the report, the arrest warrant has now been completed by the Berlin Court of Justice. However, his delivery process continues.

According to the report, the Federal Court of Justice clarifies whether the Chamber Court, which also decided on the delivery of Maja T., is responsible here. In the Zaid A.’s arrest warrant inspection, however, the Berlin court had already said that delivery to Hungary is not “inadmissible from the outset”. Delivery obstacles are currently not apparent.
