Women’s Bundesliga could be spun off from the DFB

The women’s Bundesliga may be spun off from the German Football Association in order to step out of its shadowy existence. The Rhineland Football Association (FVR) submitted a corresponding application for the DFB Bundestag on March 11, 2022. This was confirmed by the former DFB President Theo Zwanziger, who is honorary president with voting rights in the FVR Presidium, on Sunday for the German Press Agency. First “Bild” reported about it.

Since the end of last week, the proposal for a professional league under its own roof has been submitted to the acting DFB General Secretary Heike Ullrich, it is said. An independent league is intended to counteract the weak audience interest for years. “We want to throw the stone into the water,” said Zwanziger. The highest women’s league needs “a perspective outside of a large, shadowy area. That would be incredibly important to society and that is only possible with a clear profile ”.

In recent years there has also been talk of the fact that the top women’s league, like the men’s professional clubs, should be marketed by the German Football League (DFL). “This is a very interesting market,” said DFL boss Christian Seifert a year ago.

Especially at clubs like FC Bayern Munich or VfL Wolfsburg, which are also well represented in men’s football, voices have increased that the women’s league would best stand on its own two feet.

The women’s Bundesliga began its operations in 1990 in two seasons of ten teams each. In the 2018/2019 season – before the corona pandemic spread – the league did not even have 1000 visitors per game on average. Zwanziger was already a great advocate of women’s football when he was in office at the DFB. The Rhineland regional association has already proposed that ex-national player Celia Sasic succeed Hannelore Ratzeburg as DFB vice-president. (dpa)
