Tennis: David Ferrer named Davis Cup director

(ANSA-AFP) – ROME, JUN 21 – Spaniard David Ferrer, former finalist of the French Open at Roland-Garros, has been appointed director of the Davis Cup where he takes over from compatriot Albert Costa, already winner of Roland-Garros. This was announced by the Spanish group Kosmos, organizer of this competition.

“I am very happy to join the project. The Davis Cup is a unique competition – said Ferrer, 40, who has raised the silver cup three times in his old format – As a player, this is one of the great competitions you want. always play for what it represents. You compete as a team, defend the colors of your nation, spend a week with your teammates and the atmosphere in the stands is incredible, “said Ferrer.

The historic format of the Davis Cup, articulated throughout the year with knockout matches at home or away until the final, was changed in 2019 after the acquisition of the competition by Kosmos. The final phase of the new Davis Cup formula, so far played as a single block at the end of the season, is divided into two phases this year: a group stage in mid-September with sixteen teams divided into four groups in four cities, of which the first two qualified for the quarter-finals of the knockout stage at the end of November in Malaga. The games are no longer played in three winning sets without tie-break, but in two winning sets with tie-break. (ANSA-AFP).
