99 goals in four Bundesliga games: But now Spandau 04 has to improve in the Champions League

When Bilal Gbadamassi scored the 19th goal for Wasserfreunde Spandau 04, there were still over three minutes to play. The game was decided long ago, as host OSC Potsdam only had three goals at that point.

But another goal for Spandau would have been something special: The 100th for Spandau in this season of the water polo league, in only the fourth game. But he didn’t want to fall again last weekend. The encounter ended 19:4 for the Berliners.

Now high victories for the water lovers at national level are more normal than the exception. But in this way they are extraordinary. 22:4 at SV Ludwigsburg 08, 22:2 against the White Sharks Hannover and even 36:6 against SG Neukölln were the results before the performance in Potsdam. A water polo game lasts 32 minutes.

The season is still at the very beginning, but the first sign that Spandau wants to know this season, as previously announced, is the start. Especially since Waspo Hannover – permanent rival and recently German champion three times in a row – has already stumbled once, with a surprising home defeat against ASC Duisburg.

A lot of goals in the Bundesliga is a nice thing. And show that the newly formed team is on the right track again after the numerous corona cases. However, the Champions League is a completely different story. There are no easy encounters, on the contrary. In the first game there was a big defeat against last year’s finalists VK Novi Beograd, but Spandau came in with a lot of substitutes.

This Wednesday the game is at CN Sabadell near Barcelona. The Spaniards also lost their opening game. For Spandau to reach the Final 8, at least fourth place in the group of eight is required. Sabadell is therefore one of the teams to beat. However, the Spaniards won the Euro Cup, which is part of the Champions League, last season.

A few years ago, the teams met in the Champions League group, Spandau prevailed in both games and later made it into the finals.
