New hope for the championship: VSG Altglienicke sets regional league record

The VSG Altglienicke has set a record in the men’s football regional league north-east and is slowly but surely gaining ground in the race for the championship. The 1-0 (0-0) win at Chemnitzer FC on Saturday was the seventh win in a row for the team from Treptow-Köpenick. The VSG never conceded a goal, something that no club has ever managed to do since the Regionalliga Nordost is the fourth-highest German league.

Due to the strong series with 21 points and 15:0 goals, Altglienicke has worked its way up to third place and is only six points behind leaders Rot-Weiss Erfurt with one game less.

On Saturday, Karsten Heine’s team was also very lucky. Chemnitz was clearly superior for a long time, missed great chances and was punished by a goal by Patrick Breitkreuz in the 89th minute. “We were very lucky in the first half. In the end, a Sunday shot decides. Of course we’ll take that with us,” said the VSG trainer on MDR.

The second-best Berlin team remains BFC Dynamo after beating bottom tennis Borussia 3-0 (2-0) on Saturday. Viktoria 89 is still stuck in midfield due to the 2: 2 (1: 0) against relegation candidate Germania Halberstadt. (tsp)
