“Noah” day, award ceremony: 40 years after his victory, the former tennis champion will be celebrated at Roland-Garros

Former tennis player Yannick Noah should experience a special Roland-Garros this year. 40 years after his unprecedented victory against Mats Wilander, the former champion will be celebrated during the fortnight as entrusted by the president of the French Tennis Federation Gilles Moretton in “Europe 1 Sport”.

It was June 5, 1983. Against Mats Wilander. That day, by winning Roland-Garros, Yannick Noah achieved the greatest feat of his career, and undoubtedly one of the finest in French sport. Four decades later, the former captain of the French tennis team remains to this day the last Frenchman to win a Grand Slam. This year will be the 40th anniversary of this victory on Parisian clay. And for the occasion, the president of the French Tennis Federation Gilles Moretton wants to mark the occasion as he revealed it exclusively in Europe 1 Sports (every evening from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.).

“We are going to pay tribute to Yannick Noah in the Roland Garros stadium. There is going to be something that will definitely be done in the stadium to salute the character”, revealed the French tennis boss without saying more. Stade “Yannick Noah”, plaque in honor of the former tennis champion, Gilles Moretton did not want to spoil the surprise. But one thing is certain, this fortnight will be dedicated to the winner of Roland Garros 1983. “He gave a lot to tennis for years”, justified the president of the FFT.

“Very touched”

In order not to miss the event, Yannick Noah has been informed beforehand of these festivities. Without saying too much, however. “He was very sensitive and very touched by this announcement”, reported Gilles Moretton. Ahead of the start of the legendary Porte d’Auteuil Tournament, the Tennis Federation will organize events that retrace the life of the former tennis player. Because for the leader of French tennis, “there is tennis but there is also a little music” at Yannick Noah.

Another highlight of this 2023 edition, “Children’s Day” will be renamed “Yannick Noah Day”. “We know that Yannick and the children is a love story”, justified the president of the Federation. On June 5, 2023, 40 years to the day after his victory on Parisian clay, “an event will be reserved for Yannick with his friends”, enthused Gilles Moretton. Finally, the French singer should “probably participate in the award ceremony”. A wish wanted by the president of the FFT who, on June 5, 1983, was in the stands to witness the victory of the former legend of French tennis and who wishes to relive a strong moment in emotions.
