The world champion in rapid chess (Astana, 2012) and the world champion in blitz (Doha, 2016) Sergey Karyakin, who changed his citizenship from Ukrainian to Russian in 2009, refused to participate in the World Cup under a neutral flag. The tournament should be held in the capital of Azerbaijan from July 29 to August 26
“The fact is that at the upcoming tournament I won’t be able to represent my country, I won’t be able to play under my own flag, and in case of a successful performance, I won’t hear the Russian anthem. I am categorically against this, my position does not change, I expressed it many times,” Karjakin wrote in his Telegram channel.
As GLOBAL HAPPENINGS reported, with the start of a full-scale invasion of Karjakin, he supported “SVO” and demonstrated z-symbols in every possible way, for which he received a six-month disqualification from FIDE.
On June 2 last year, Karjakin received the state award of the aggressor country. The network called this event a real shame and questioned the official reason for such a decision by the authorities.
Last year, Sergei went to Donetsk to transfer assistance to the 117th rifle regiment of the “people’s militia” of the “DNR”.
