Facebook changes stream of posts with more content from strangers

Elections, La Russa:

(ANSA) – MILAN, JUL 28 – Meta-Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said that by the end of 2023 the company will double the amount of content showing the suggested accounts between Facebook and Instagram boards. The idea, although not declared, is to move the community and encourage new connections. Just Zuckerberg recalled how the recommendations of posts that come from strangers, photos, texts and videos, and friends to add, represent about 15% of the average of what a subscriber sees on Facebook.

Percentage that is slightly higher on Instagram. The push, which Zuckerberg refers to as the “Discovery Engine”, is very close to what the competition already does through the use of Artificial Intelligence for both the organization of news feeds and recommended users. An approach that has made TikTok one of the most used apps in the world, generating a completely new and unexplored market. During Meta’s second quarter earnings meeting, Zuckerberg explained, “As AI finds additional content that people find interesting, this increases the engagement and quality of our feeds.” He therefore stressed that Meta will use AI to recommend all the content that people publicly share on his service, such as links or photos. Facebook’s last big change in how it recommends content was in 2018, when Zuckerberg announced a strategy focused on encouraging “meaningful social interactions” between friends in the news feed. When it was introduced, the manager had predicted that the novelty would lead to a decrease in the time spent on the social network but would make users feel better. “Research shows that when we use social media to connect with the people we care about, it can be good for our well-being,” he said four years ago.
