The American Meteor Society (AMS) has received over 80 reports of this fiery phenomenon in the sky. At first he was mistaken for a comet or other cosmic body. Earlier we wrote that a meteorite almost killed a woman in her sleep – it broke through the roof and fell on her bed.

But astronomer Jonathan McDowell, who works at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, calculated that just at that time the satellite Kosmos-2551 flew over the region, writes livescience.com.

Cosmos-2551 Is a Russian reconnaissance satellite that was launched on 9 September but apparently went out of order shortly thereafter.

According to McDowell, he never corrected his trajectory and it was expected that he would soon return to the Earth’s atmosphere. The only thing is that he misunderstood the exact time of the fall.

“The fall of Cosmos-2551 will probably do without casualties. The satellite weighs about 500 kg, it is unlikely that its debris will reach the ground,” McDowell added in his Twitter.
