A special event will honor the 60 years of the International Center for theoretical physics Abdus Salam (ICTP), on 9 May at the UN headquarters, in New York, organized by the Permanent Mission of Italy at the United Nations and UNESCO, entitled “Promote global scientific cooperation for sustainable development: leverageing quantum science to prepare for the future”.
The meeting will be underlined the key role of ICTP in promoting fundamental science and global scientific collaboration. The Nobel Prize Duncan Haldane, winner of the ICTP’s DIRAC medal in 2012, will hold the opening speech. The experience of the Cameroonian researcher and entrepreneur Estelle Inck and Raji Ashenofi Mamade, Ethiopian doctoral student, will then be highlighted. Inck, completed the program, has achieved a doctorate of research with Sissa, and is a researcher at the Perimeter Institute and co-founder of the Yiyaniq company, who deals with quantum technology. Mamade, on the other hand, completed the post-graduate diploma of the ICTP and immediately left for MIT, where the doctorate is obtaining.
Among the illustrious ex-daily program of the program present at the event, the honorable Ntoi Paul Rapapa, Minister of Education of Lesotho, also stands out. A round table will then take place with the director of ICTP Atish Dabholkar, the Mathematics Aissa Wade, professor at the University of Pennsylvania and Professor Greg Gabadadze, vice president section Mathematical and physical sciences at the Simons Foundation. The opportunities of two initiatives promoted by the United Nations will also be discussed: the international decade of the sciences for sustainable development launched in 2024, and the international year of quantum science and technology, which is celebrated this year.
