France: Le Pen suspends the presidential campaign

(ANSA) – PARIS, 22 FEB – Marine Le Pen suspends her presidential campaign “until obtaining the patronage” necessary to be able to run for the Elysée: this is what her staff reports, less than two months after the vote. In France, each candidate in the race for the Elysée must collect 500 signatures from elected representatives of the République to be able to officially present himself to the highest office of the state.

At the moment, the candidate has obtained just 366 signatures and the deadline for filing the candidacy is in about ten days, March 4th.

Several polls indicate Le Pen in second position behind Emmanuel Macron ahead of the vote on 10 and 24 April.

The other far-right candidate, Eric Zemmour (Reconquete) is also in the same situation, with just 291 sponsors confirmed less than fifty days before the election.
