(ANSA) – NEW YORK, MAY 06 – One in five children lives in poverty in New York City. This was revealed by the annual report of the non-profit Robin Hood in collaboration with Columbia University. According to the data, nearly one and a half million residents live in poverty and it is mainly African Americans, Hispanics and Asians who are the most affected. The city’s poverty rate is also double the national average.
The report also revealed that the poverty rate did not rise further during the pandemic thanks to government aid alone. However, as the city moves increasingly towards the road to recovery, it is once again the so-called minorities that are being left out.
“Despite the incredible progress of recent years – commented Robin Hood President Rich Buery – and despite the incredible effect of some of the strong government policies and financial transfers that have helped New Yorkers stay afloat during the pandemic, yes he sees that they continue to suffer “. Buery also added that the unemployment rate remains high in those sectors that mainly employ low-income and black residents. (HANDLE).
