Colombia: President Duque sentenced to 5 days of house arrest

(ANSA) – BOGOTÁ, JUN 05 – The superior court of the Colombian city of Ibagué has ordered the imposition of five days of house arrest for the president of the republic Iván Duque, finding him guilty of insulting justice for failing to comply with a sentence that imposed urgent environmental protection measures.

In the ruling, which is appealable, the court also ordered the head of state to pay a fine of 15 million pesos (about 3,750 euros).

The judge justified his decision on the grounds that the president would not have respected the orders issued in 2020 by the Supreme Court of Justice’s Cassation of Labor which required him to protect the Los Nevados natural park in the central Colombian Andes Two years ago the complainants in the Supreme Court had presented evidence of contamination in that national park that endangered several water sources that supply over 4 million people in the departments of Caldas, Quindío, Risaralda and Tolima.

The broadcaster specifies that within a few days Ibagué’s sentence will be examined by the Colombian Supreme Court of Justice in Bogotà which will confirm or cancel the sanction.

For his part, President Duque said yesterday that he had always “worked to respect the protection of the Parque de los Nevados”, and that there is evidence of this. The head of state also defined the sentence as “unconstitutional” because it does not respect the immunity he has, and constitutes an “act of open abuse”, contrary to the precepts of honesty and fairness.
