The Peruvian president, Pedro Castillo, yesterday proposed the holding of a summit with his colleagues from Ecuador, Colombia, Brazil, Bolivia and Chile to address the issue of migration that affects the entire region.
Through a statement from the presidency, Castillo announced that “we are about to hold a multinational meeting to examine an urgent issue such as migration”. It is, he assured at the end of a council of ministers held in Tacna, on the border with Chile, of “a relevant issue that concerns us all”.
“I propose to my fellow presidents of the region – he concluded without specifying a date – to hold this summit in Peru”.
For his part yesterday Federico Luis Agusti, representative of the United Nations refugee agency (‘Unhcr), reminded on RPP radio that Peru is the second country in the world with the largest population of Venezuelan migrants, with about 1, 3 million refugees, surpassed only by Colombia (with 1.8 million).
