North Macedonia: Bulgaria vetoes proposed EU membership

(ANSAmed) – SOFIA, JUN 24 – After a heated debate, the Bulgarian parliament approved the motion put forward by the opposition and supported by the party ‘Let’s continue the change’ of the outgoing premier Kiril Petkov aimed at supporting the French proposal to resolve the dispute between Bulgaria and North Macedonia regarding the start of negotiations for Skopje’s entry into the EU. This removes Sofia’s veto on the start of North Macedonia’s negotiations with Brussels, which had lasted for a year and a half. 170 deputies voted in favor of the French proposal, 37 against 21 abstentions. 228 deputies of the 240 in the unicameral parliament.
