(ANSA-AFP) – SINGAPORE, JUL 14 – The president of Sri Lanka, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, was authorized today to enter Singapore on a private visit but has not obtained asylum, the city-state said. The leader arrived from the Maldives, an archipelago where he took refuge after fleeing the capital Colombo following protests due to the economic crisis affecting the country.
“It is confirmed that Mr. Rajapaksa has been allowed to enter Singapore on a private visit,” the Singapore Foreign Ministry said in a statement. “He has not requested or been granted any asylum. Singapore generally does not accept asylum requests,” he added. (ANSA-AFP).
