Kenya: allegations of fraud delay election results

(ANSA) – NAIROBI, AUG 13 – The denunciation of widespread fraud, among the various constituencies, threatens the outcome of the elections in Kenya, forcing the electoral commission to race against time to deliver credible results within the deadline allowed by law , or Tuesday 16 August.

The accusations come from the Azimio La Umoja alliance headed by opposition leader Raila Odinga, also supported by the Jubilee party of current president Uhuru Kenyatta.

“It is with great concern that the electoral process has been highly compromised,” said Jubilee Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni. In a statement released by the Daily Nation newspaper, Kioni states that the fraud has been detected in 33 constituencies in the country, where the turnout does not correspond to the ballots used.

The coalition of the other candidate for president William Ruto, Kenya Kwanza, has rejected the allegations of fraud, calling it an attempt to prevent the electoral commission from fulfilling its mandate. “It is unfortunate that our competitors interfere with the commission’s work and make it difficult for officials to complete it,” said Senator Kipchumba Murkomen.

The counting of the ballots at the Nairobi national center was interrupted several times yesterday also due to disputes between the agents of the two factions admitted to observe the final transcription process of the records of the 292 constituencies. (HANDLE).
