A former car of Princess Diana sold for 869 thousand euros

(ANSA) – LONDON, AUGUST 27 – An anonymous buyer, resident in the Manchester region, won an ex-personal car of Princess Diana at auction for the modest sum of 869,000 euros. The man managed to win the precious heirloom by beating two other eligible buyers – from Dubai and the United States -. Therefore the 1985 Ford Escort RS Turbo should remain in its country of origin. The car had a base price of £ 100,000, but the final offer reached £ 650,000, to which VAT will be added.

With a power of 130 horsepower, this Ford is a sporty version, typical of the “GtI”, popular cars of the 80s. It is unique for its black color: the other Escort RS Turbo of this generation were in fact white. Diana, according to Silverstone Auctions, drove this car herself to get around London, and Prince William was also transported aboard her. In very good condition and with only 40,000 km, the car was used by the princess from 1985 to 1988.

In June 2021, another Ford Escort used by Diana, a 1981 1.6 Ghia sedan given to her for her engagement, was sold for £ 52,000 to a South American bidder.

Today’s auction sale acquires a particular symbolic value a few days after the 25th anniversary of Lady D’s death, which took place precisely on August 31, at the age of 36, in a car accident in Paris in Alma tunnel.
