Civil 20 to Draghi, from G20 concreteness not only good intentions

“The world we want is not that of the strong who are generously capable of welcoming the weakest, but the one built by sharing the vulnerabilities and talents of each and everyone”. It is a passage from the open letter sent to Prime Minister Mario Draghi by Civil 20, an international civil society network that dialogues with the governments of the G20. Recognized as the official G20 Engagement Group, it is made up of over 560 international organizations and networks from more than 100 countries.
Recalling the evils of the planet and the delays in politics, from malnutrition to inequalities, from climate change to the consequences of the pandemic, Civil 20 appeals to Draghi “so that the upcoming G20 summit and the subsequent COP26 are an opportunity to show the ability to follow up to utterances and good intentions with concrete and effective actions “. And it also expresses “concern for the alarming narrowing of the listening space for civil society proposals” In the letter, Civil 20 recalls the Policy Pack and the Final Communiqué presented on 7 October and underlines a series of “essential points” proposed by changing priorities presented by the Italian presidency of the G20 ‘People, Planet, Prosperity’ in ‘People, Planet, Democracy’.
“Promoting human rights, gender equality, equity and inclusion, so as to accelerate the achievement of the objectives of the 2030 Agenda and the implementation of the Paris Agreement” is one of the fundamental keys according to Civil 20 which calls for to “guarantee a systemic approach to health, climatic, natural and social crises so that no one is left behind” but also to “favor the enlargement of the fiscal space in low and middle-income countries, burdened by the spending needs of the pandemic, through a more robust debt initiative “and” to ensure respect for human rights, the rule of law and freedom of expression “.
