Meloni mends with Macron: ‘There is a desire to collaborate’

Italy can be said to be very satisfied” with the conclusions of the European Council. This was stated by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni at the end of the summit. On the subject of migration there was “a change of pace in the last Council but now migration remains a priority of the EU’s objectives”, he added, with a “verification of the implementation of the results in the next European Council. This shows that it wasn’t a spot and a single initiative”. “We are working on concrete results that seem good to me and demonstrate good faith in tackling this matter” for which Italy can be said to be “satisfied”, she concluded.

The Meloni-Macron face-to-face. The premier is then said she was satisfied with the bilateral agreement with Macron. “It was a long and broad meeting on the scenario and the complex situation on the geopolitical front. There is a desire to collaborate,” she added.

“With Giorgia Meloni we had a very good discussion that it has allowed us to clarify many topics and to define the issues on which we can act together”. The French president said for his part.

“In the conversation with Giorgia Meloni we focused on the situation in Tunisia, which is a lot worrying for the political tension and the economic crisis it is experiencing. From Tunisia there is growing migratory pressure towards Italy and the European Union. There is a willingness to act together, both to help Tunisia regain political stability and to stop migratory flows, through cooperation and dialogue with the Tunisian president”, added Macron.

With Paris “it seems to me that there is a desire to collaborate on matters of strategic importance for Italy and France, I am thinking of the migration issue on which I find President Macron’s great willingness to address it in a structural way. Also in industrial matters and things on which the interests of France and Italy can coincide. It seems to me that there was a very productive and favorable climate, and I think this can be useful for facing common challenges. I am satisfied with this bilateral agreement as well as with others”, said Giorgia Meloni in Brussels, underlining Italy’s “protagonism”.

Do I share France’s position on nuclear power? “I share the position of technological neutrality, so yes, I think that in addition to the technologies that can guarantee the objectives that the EU has set itself, other “technologies that meet certain targets must also be recognised, regardless of whether nuclear power is used or not in a nation,” said Prime Minister Meloni.

“The matter of the Mes should not be discussed upstream but downstream and in the context in which it operates. The reference to economic governance is not made by chance, and also to other tools, which are more effective at the moment. This morning we discussed union banking and in terms of backstops, the Mes is a sort of Cassation, the banking union are the first and second degree. It is a reasoning that must be done in an overall picture”.

“No, I see absolutely no risk” of the EU not paying the third tranche of the Pnrr. “There is a very serious, collaborative work, we have inherited a situation that certainly requires us to work very quickly, that is what we are doing together with the Commission. I have now spoken to Ursula von der Leyen and it seems to me that the Commission greatly appreciates the serious work of Italy. The decisions that are taken are decisions that we are sharing”, said Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni at the end of the EU summit.

European banks are solid. This was assured by the EU leaders at the end of the Brussels summit. “The fundamentals of European bonds are strong, the eurozone is the area where the banks are the strongest and in this context we have discussed accelerating the creation of the banking union,” said French President Emmanuel Macron. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz agrees. “The EU banking system is robust and safe,” he said, and has “the necessary control structures.” And he added: “Deutsche Bank is a very profitable bank, there is no reason to worry”. The president of the Eurogroup, Paschal Donohoe, was also “confident in the resilience of our banking system”, calling for the “full ratification of the reform of the European Stability Mechanism”. The only country that has not ratified the ESM reform treaty is Italy. The ratification of the European Stability Mechanism “is important” but “how this will happen is up to the Italian Parliament and, of course, the Italian Government”, he added. “I will just emphasize again what I have done before, which is the value of ratifying the treaty as a whole by all members, because it will play a valuable role in how we can strengthen our cooperation for all,” he has declared. “We look forward to cooperating and working with them in every way.”
