Borrell announced a decrease in the likelihood of nuclear war: what does China have to do with it

EU High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy Josep Borrell believes that after Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Moscow, the likelihood of a nuclear war has decreased. In his opinion, Xi made it clear to Russian President Vladimir Putin that nuclear weapons should not be used.

This is reported by the Financial Times with reference to the words of Borrell. Also, in his opinion, this indicates China’s unwillingness to interfere in the military confrontation between Russia and Ukraine.

“Xi Jinping made it very clear to Putin that he should not deploy nuclear weapons, citing China’s 12-point peace plan for Ukraine condemning their use,” Borrell was quoted as saying.

According to the high representative of the EU, in this way, the Chinese leader wants to minimize the risk of being associated with a Russian military invasion of Ukraine.

“Xi Jinping’s visit to Moscow this month has made the world a safer place by reducing the likelihood that Vladimir Putin will use nuclear weapons,” Josep Borrell said.

Earlier, GLOBAL HAPPENINGS reported that on March 20, Chinese President Xi Jinping visited Moscow and held a meeting with Russian President Putin. It consisted of three parts – public, tete-a-tete negotiations and an informal dinner. Informal negotiations of politicians lasted 4.5 hours.

Ahead of the visit, the White House said it was skeptical of a meeting between the Chinese leader and the Russian president, as there was little evidence that their talks could lead to positive developments for Ukraine.

In particular, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said that the Chinese leader’s visit to Moscow provides “diplomatic cover” for Russian crimes in Ukraine. According to Blinken, the goal of China’s “peace plan” is to freeze hostilities in Ukraine. However, the Russian Federation must completely withdraw its troops from the neighboring country.
