At least three people were injured this morning during a peaceful anti-coup demonstration in Yangon after Burmese security forces hit the crowd in a large car, eyewitnesses reported.
“They increased their speed when they approached the demonstrators – said a reporter who wanted to remain anonymous for security reasons, referring to the Burmese soldiers – it was as if they wanted to run over them”. Some people, including those carrying banners in support of the deposed leader Aung San Suu Kyi, were run over and fell to the ground while others fled. “Then the soldiers jumped out of the car and started shooting,” continued the reporter.
According to another witness, one of the demonstrators was seriously injured and was taken away by ambulance along with two others, one of whom is a local journalist. The soldiers then began beating three people who were run over by the car, a 26-year-old resident said. “The soldiers then pointed their weapons at us and ordered everyone present to leave, so we were forced to leave,” he added.
